What’s It About?
DIGITALWERKSTATT ART STUDIO takes a slightly different approach to a classic drawing program. Instead of paint brushes and crayons, kids create their art using a variety of shapes like triangles, squares, stars, hearts, semi-circles, etc. Kids can rotate and scale the shapes, as well as change the outline and fill color. There's also a text tool for adding titles and messages. For kids who are creating more advanced designs, there's the option to move shapes forward and back. Designs can be saved as a device photo and shared.
Is It Any Good?
While the overall platform is simple, encouraging kids to look at objects as a collection of shapes is a great foundation for creating artwork. Digitalwerkstatt Art Studio has all the elements kids need to express themselves without a lot of distractions. The tutorial can be finicky, often not recognizing correct movements. And it may not be immediately obvious what all of the icons mean. Those hurdles are easy to overcome, however, and kids will quickly be making their own artwork. This is a fun little app that's a great, device-based creative activity.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about shapes in Digitalwerkstatt Art Studio and real life. Looks for shapes in everyday objects, like rectangular doors and windows, circular mirrors and wheels, etc. How do basic shapes come together to make other objects?
Take the creativity offscreen. How can you work with shapes on paper? Can you cut out stencils and make art that way?
How do you like this app in comparison with other apps you could play? As you balance your time on- and offscreen, would this be an app you'd choose to use? Why or why not?
