# Dinosaur Train Classic in the Jurassic, Jr.!

Three fun games get show's fans thinking mathematically.

## What parents need to know

Educational value

Kids can learn to think mathematically as they work with estimation, representation, measurement, and algebraic thinking. Kids need to understand more than number sense or counting to have a strong math foundation, and this app introduces other important math concepts. They'll estimate and balance by weight, work with patterns, and begin to understand representation. Dinosaur Train Classic in the Jurassic, Jr.! builds on kids' interest in the hit series to develop math skills.

Ease of play

Most of the controls are very easy for a preschooler to figure out, but the balance scale can look very close to balanced when it's not, and putting the dinosaurs in order by height may require some trial and error.

Kids help dinosaurs get ready for a big event in Troodon Town by playing three math-based games, such as balancing food on a scale and sorting dinosaurs by size to put them in the right houses. Kids also drag their fingers across the space between two cliffs to find the number of logs they'll need for a bridge. They can use early algebra to figure out the right combination of logs to fit the space. As they complete the games, kids can arrange a sticker scene they can view online with a code.

## Is it any good?

QUALITY

DINOSAUR TRAIN CLASSIC IN THE JURASSIC, JR.! isn't about counting or recognizing numbers, as are so many math apps geared for younger kids, but it gets kids thinking mathematically. It is nonreader friendly with verbal instructions and multiple chances to get the right answer. There's no tracking or reporting of what skills kids are learning or in which parts of the games a kid may be having difficulty; adding some tracking and reporting would improve this app. Still, fans of the PBS series will enjoy helping Buddy and his friends as they practice early-math skills.

• Have your preschooler help serve a snack or meal and estimate portions to give everyone an equal amount.

• Building-block play is a great way to get kids thinking mathematically.
