What parents need to know

Ease of play

The app's controls are generally quite simple to use. The information learned here is very detailed and may prove a complicated lesson for some younger kids.

Violence & scariness

One mini-game based around food chains asks you to guide different sharks to eat their prey. There's a chomping sound when the shark feeds, but the prey simply disappears.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Discovery Kids Sharks is a very thorough lesson on the ocean's deadliest predators. In a dozen different sections, kids will learn about the way sharks feed, the features of a shark, where different sharks live, and more. Each lesson features textual info to read, a video to watch, and a game to play. The games are often quiz based, testing you on the information you've learned along the way. Scoring well earns you stickers to play with on an underwater sticker scene.

Is it any good?

If you have a shark-loving child, DISCOVERY KIDS SHARKS will be a gold mine. This app will teach you about types of sharks you didn't even know existed. All sorts of fascinating nuggets pop up throughout and are passed along to kids through amazing videos and entertaining games and quizzes. Trading cards can be earned along the way, which not only appeals to a kid's love of collecting, but also provides a method for passing on even more shark knowledge. In some cases, kids will need to read the cards in order to find answers they need for a game. This is an incredibly well-made app and we can only hope to see more in the series.
