Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Disney Animated is a hands-on educational look at how Disney revolutionized the animation process in film. The app features a thorough look at the history of Disney animation from the days of hand drawings to today's computer-generated imagery. There's no truly objectionable content -- though if you freeze a frame in one section, you might find one of the scarier moments from an animated film. The larger concern is space and price. The app is huge -- 1.78 GB -- and needs more space when it's installed. Also, at $9.99, it's more expensive than the typical app.

What's it about?

The app offers unprecedented access to the art behind all 53 of Disney's animated films. Though it's designed as a tool for learning the particulars, it's a good tool for fans, too, offering looks at footage, concept art, and animation tests. There are several interactive elements; fans can animate Vanellope from Wreck-It Ralph using an animation package adapted from real Disney software, control a swirling-snow visual effect from the upcoming film Frozen, and manipulate the facial expressions of Maximus from Tangled. They also can share their creations. Users manipulate characters through a series of swipes.

QUALITY

Die-hard fans of Disney films will go nuts over this authoritative and exhaustive look into the company's animation studios. Though DISNEY ANIMATED is expensive, it's an app that can justify the high price with a wealth of information, behind-the-scenes looks at never-seen footage, and tools that will let budding animators begin to learn the craft.

With 750 animated clips and more than 150 images, there's plenty here to keep fans occupied. The interactive elements make it less of a textbook and more of an interactive playground. Fans will be most delighted by the app's color map, which contains every frame from every animated movie shrunk to fit on a single page. By touching the lines, users can scan through the frames as an iconic song plays, and they can see the evolution of the company's offerings.

Families can talk about...

  • Encourage your child to make her own cartoons, using the techniques discussed here.

  • Watch a Disney film together and discuss how the tools shown were used in the making of that film.
