A lot or a little?

The parents' guide to what's in this app.

Educational Value

Kids can learn early reading skills through listening and responding to the stories. Each appisode has a different positive message for preschoolers, like healthy habits, honesty and friendship, and cooperation. Kids will become confident with using the touchscreen and work on preschool concepts like shapes and colors through some of the interactive questions. Disney Junior Appisodes takes TV favorites and turns them into interactive learning experiences for preschoolers.

Ease of Play

The app plays a full episode with pauses for kids' interaction. Kids must respond to continue the show.

Consumerism

One appisode is included with the free app. Others are available for $4.99 per appisode. Appisodes for purchase are featured at the start of the app, but the purchase permissions are behind a parent-password screen.

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Disney Junior Appisodes is a platform that includes one free appisode (an interactive episode) -- Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Road Rally Appisode. Appisodes of other shows can be purchased for $4.99 each. When kids open the app, they'll see a banner ad for one of the appisodes and a button to show all the appisodes available in he appisodes store. When they tap an appisode to purchase, they're reminded verbally to ask a parent's permission, and an adult has to enter a numeric passcode to access the store. Young readers could certainly circumvent that, though. Each appisode takes up quite a bit of memory -- up to 600 MB each.

What's it about?

Appisodes are a combination of an episode of a show and an interactive app, and Disney Junior Appisodes are available for shows like Doc McStuffins, Sofia the First, and Jake and the Neverland Pirates. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Road Rally is included for free. Kids watch the episode as normal but with interactive pauses to tap answers or make decisions for characters. There's also a pop-up microphone that indicates their verbal responses are heard (though the speaker doesn't actually respond based on the words kids say.) Each appisode is about a half-hour long.

Is it any good?

For parents concerned that their preschooler just zones out in front of a show, these appisodes can coax some interaction out of kids and engage them in solving the characters' problems. Kids will feel like their favorite characters are talking to them and, maybe, even listening to them. It'd be nice if the microphone actually used the kids' words or voice at some point in a appisode or responded based on a kid's verbal responses, too. With a full half-hour interactive episode, Disney Junior Appisodes can engage preschoolers for longer than many other preschool apps.

Talk to your kids about ...

  • Appisodes are pricey but could make for engaging experiences on road trips.

  • Help kids prioritize which shows are their favorites when choosing which appisodes to purchase.

  • Balance time that kids watch and play alone with some parent-kid watching and discussing time.
