Doodle Food Expedition HD

Trajectory puzzler has a benevolent storyline.

What parents need to know

Ease of play

The puzzles can become quite challenging, but the controls are simple to learn and there are enough easy levels at the start to allow you to get the hang of the game.

Violence & scariness

The game is ostensibly set in a war zone, but your goal is to deliver food to refugees -- not to fight anyone. Some of the obstacles have a hint of combat, though. There are "bomb" squares that will cause your food pack to blow up if it hits them, as well as cannons that shoot streams of cartoony cannonballs that you'll need to avoid. Stick figure soldiers are also depicted holding what may or may not be guns, but if those are weapons, they're never fired.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that while Doodle Food Expedition is a game set in a fictitious war zone, it's not about fighting. It's about delivering food to the stranded civilians who are going hungry. Kids need to launch food packets through an obstacle-filled field and get them to the refugees on the other side of the screen. The artwork is all depicted in crayon stick figures -- what has come to be known in the app world as the "doodle" style.

Is it any good?

While most trajectory-based puzzle apps, like Angry Birds or Crush the Castle, are about launching weapons to destroy enemies, DOODLE FOOD EXPEDITION is about launching meal packages to save the lives of worn-stricken civilians who are trapped amid chaos. It's a nice change of pace (even if the over-used "doodle" artwork isn't). The game plays very nicely, too. Controlling the angle and force behind a launch is simple to do, and the challenge increases as you go, with new obstacles -- like springs, levers, pinwheels, and enemy cannons -- that force you to think more strategically.
