What parents need to know

Educational value

Kids can learn a little about animals and nature with themed coloring packs like, "Show Me the Honey" (comes with the initial purchase), which teaches about bees and honey or "Light Up the Night" (in-app purchase for $1.99), which teaches about lightening bugs. Kids can learn little facts about the theme on each coloring template, and if they read all the templates within the pack together, they can connect the concepts to get a bigger picture. While Dr. Seuss's The Cat in the Hat Color & Create! offers some educational content, the main focus is really for kids to have fun coloring with the cool magic tools.

Ease of play

The app provides very clear and kid-friendly verbal instructions throughout. However, parents may have to help kids read the text that appears on each template.

The app comes with two coloring packs; additional coloring packs are available with in-app purchase from the "Design Shop." In-app purchases are accessible to kids, though a verbal prompt tells them to "Ask a parent for help."

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Dr. Seuss's The Cat in the Hat Color & Create! is an educational coloring app with magic coloring tools and science-themed templates. Inspired by the PBS Kids TV Show, The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That!, most of the templates show animals and environments and include text-only descriptions of each scene. The app comes with two coloring packs, only one of which focuses on science. For more educational value, parents may want to purchase additional coloring packs. While there is a prompt to ask parents for help, kids can easily access the links for email sharing and in-app purchases.

What's it about?

DR. SEUSS'S THE CAT IN THE HAT COLOR & CREATE! gives kids a few different ways to get creative. For basic coloring, kids pick a color and tool from wheels at the bottom of the screen; they can choose from crayon, small or big brush, and more. There are more unique tools as well, such as the confetti machine that’s like glitter and the magic machine, which allows kids to paint with animated butterflies or other backgrounds. When kids are done creating their masterpieces, they can save to the device or email them to friends.

Is it any good?

Dr. Seuss's The Cat in the Hat Color & Create! is a fun coloring app that includes cool special effects not seen in other apps of this genre. For example, there's the confetti machine that operates a bit like glitter; kids swipe their finger across the screen, and the confetti machine blows a bunch of confetti onto the swiped area.

With all this fun, however, the science content is easy to miss. There are audio instructions for using the different coloring tools, but there is no reading of the text on each page. Parents may want to scroll through the finished colorings and read them with their kids like a book to boost the learning in this fun, creative app.

Families can talk about...

  • Read the coloring pages with your kids and elaborate on the text to extend the learning.

  • Take kids to the zoo to see animals close up. Ask kids to tell you what they know about the animals and share what you know as well.
