The parents' guide to what's in this app.

Educational Value

Kids can learn attributes of shapes including triangles, squares, rectangles, hexagons, trapezoids, pentagons, and rhombi. As they manipulate shapes to complete puzzles, kids develop spatial awareness and an understanding of geometric relationships. For example, in Level 1, kids have to rotate triangles to form squares. This reinforces the idea that moving shapes doesn't change their attributes and that small shapes can form larger composite shapes. Kids also learn about right angles and parallel and perpendicular sides. Dragon Shapes: Geometry Challenge is an exciting and interactive way for kids to build strong geometry and problem-solving skills.

Ease of Play

Large shapes and a rotating dial make it easy for kids to use the touch interface.

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Dragon Shapes: Geometry Challenge is a set of interactive puzzles that teaches kids early geometry concepts. Kids drag and rotate shapes into place to complete tangram-style pictures. As kids complete the puzzles, they learn how to arrange small shapes to make larger composite shapes and learn important attributes of shapes. There are four levels of difficulty that follow a story about rescuing a village dragon, and each level focuses on puzzles related to a particular animal: butterfly, turtle, mountain goat, and dragon. Kids will enjoy the beautiful graphics, engaging story line, and challenging puzzles.

What's it about?

DRAGON SHAPES: GEOMETRY CHALLENGE begins with a brief story about rescuing a village's dragon. Kids are given tangram-style puzzles to complete, which can be done by dragging shapes and rotating them to fit the puzzle. There are four main levels and a total of 50 puzzles. Kids have to finish a puzzle before moving on to the next one, and they're provided with essential vocabulary and other information before starting. Kids are not penalized for repeated attempts, and they can access hints along the way. A "grown-ups" section has information about the game's educational goals, settings, and a privacy policy.

Is it any good?

With its gorgeous graphics and tangram-style puzzles, Dragon Shapes: Geometry Challenge is a fantastic tool for teaching early geometry skills. Not only do kids learn the names and attributes of many shapes, but they also develop spatial reasoning and problem-solving skills. The shape-rotating feature is large enough for small fingers to easily use, and the differently colored shapes that make up each puzzle help kids visualize composite figures. Kids can learn important math skills and have plenty of fun as they work to rescue the village dragon.

Talk to your kids about ...

  • Families can talk about shapes. As kids work on the puzzles, talk about which small shapes make up the larger composite shapes.

  • Have kids design their own tangram puzzles using paper, pencil, a ruler, and scissors. Kids can draw the puzzle, cut out the shapes, and put the puzzle back together.
