Dreamworks Dragons Adventure

What parents need to know
Parents need to know that Dreamworks Dragons Adventure is an adventure/arcade game that blends real-world landmarks with fictional environments to further the immersion experience. The game uses characters from the popular film franchise but doesn't overly promote the films or other tie-ins. Rather than the sometimes ferocious battles of the films, the game focuses on finding targets on a map. In one mode the app uses your kid's geolocation and creates an in-game map that mirrors the actual landmarks in your kid's vicinity.
What's it about?
Players take part in a variety of challenges, such as flying their dragons to transport sheep from one location to the other, by using the phone or tablet's internal gyroscope. By tilting the screen right or left, you control flight patterns, and by tilting it up and down, you control altitude (which also can be controlled by sliding your finger up and down the screen). As you play on the go, the game uses mapping technology to determine a player's location and show nearby landmarks in a reimagined world. Real-time weather data also is incorporated into DREAMWORKS DRAGONS ADVENTURE.
Is it any good?
Dreamworks Dragons Adventure is fueled by one of those ideas that makes you wonder why no one thought of it before: Make a game more entertaining for kids by remapping their world within the game and incorporating real-time weather. It should be the perfect road-trip game; it even has goals that are meant to be accomplished by the time you reach your destination.
Unfortunately, it's an idea whose execution doesn't quite work. The game's controls don't function as smoothly as you'd like them to, and it's impossible to be precise with them. Maps take a long time to load, which kills any sort of momentum. It could have set itself far apart from its competitors with a fair bit more polish.
