A lot or a little?
The parents' guide to what's in this app.
What parents need to know
Parents need to know that Electric Sums – Lumio Addition & Subtraction (Full Version) teaches kids strategies for addition and subtraction with three-digit numbers. Kids solve problems to help Digit (who loves gadgets) and his robot Bobo fix items around the house. Kids break apart numbers so they can add and subtract by place values. As they play, kids unlock levels that become increasingly difficult. Instructional support and hints are offered regularly, and kids earn lightning-bolt rewards for answering questions correctly.
What's it about?
ELECTRIC SUMS - LUMIO ADDITION & SUBTRACTION (FULL VERSION) is organized into two learning pathways: Fix It Digit! and Digit's Black Out. Each mode includes more than 30 levels that begin by helping kids build comprehension and end by reinforcing concepts and fact fluency. In Fix It Digit!, kids deconstruct numbers and then add them using place value. In Digit's Black Out, kids work with subtraction problems on a number line. Kids can earn up to three lightning-bolt rewards for each correct answer.
Is it any good?
The focus on place value strategies and using the number line model are effective ways for kids to build comprehension and fluency with addition and subtraction. Both approaches help kids visualize changes in large quantities; however, some of the graphics may be confusing for some kids at first, so writing them on paper as number sentences may be helpful. Hints and feedback are constructive and support learning, encouraging kids to solve the problems on their own. Kids can easily view the levels they have completed, but it would be great if they could collect and display their rewards. The ability to view a more detailed progress summary also would be quite useful for setting concrete learning goals.
Talk to your kids about ...
Families can talk about the importance of addition and subtraction in their daily lives. Point out the usefulness of estimation strategies when making purchases or setting goals to save money.
Have kids write number sentences or equations to match the circuits in the problems. Use a vertical format to emphasize the use of place value for adding and subtracting.
