Endless Alphabet

(i)

Cute ABC and vocab app will appeal to a wide range of ages.

What parents need to know

Educational value

Kids can learn vivid vocabulary in addition to the alphabet. They see letters and hear sounds and can learn to spell the words. Words such as yodel and multiply might be new to them whereas words such as vacuum and journey may challenge their spelling abilities. Endless Alphabet has a simple premise that offers engaging content in an exploration-friendly format.

Ease of play

Swiping, tapping, and dragging are intuitive in this preschool-friendly app.

The information section for parents includes links to the developer's other apps, but it's behind a security screen that can't be accessed by nonreaders. The free version of the app (Android) requires a paid upgrade to unlock the full alphabet.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Endless Alphabet requires an Internet connection and a lot of storage space for full functionality. Though the idea of an alphabet app is targeted to preschoolers, older kids will get a kick out of the animations and expand their vocabularies, too, with the vivid words included. More words are added periodically.

What's it about?

A monster's mouth is full of words in alphabetical order. Kids scroll through and select a word and then see and hear the word, put the word back together with phonetic sounds for each letter, and watch an animation demonstrating the word's meaning. It's "endless" since new words are added regularly. These aren't the typical words of preschool phonics apps, either. No "C is for cat" here: C is for cooperate. Kids will learn other great vocabulary such as bellow, gargantuan, opera, and quarrel.

Is it any good?

QUALITY

ENDLESS ALPHABET is simple yet powerful. Kids work at their own pace with no objective or goals beyond exploring the words in this endless alphabet. The animations demonstrate the meanings of the words in an unforgettable way -- like seeing a monster grow from normal-size to gargantuan or an invisible word appear when paint is thrown on it. The only problem with Endless Alphabet is that it may be misnamed. This is more of a vocabulary app than a way to merely learn the alphabet.

Families can talk about...

  • Read to kids from books just beyond their reading levels to expose them to a variety of vivid language and improve their vocabularies and expressive-language skills.

  • Speak to your kids using advanced vocabulary and be prepared to respond to the questions the new words may elicit.
