Engaging practice activities; better feedback needed.

What parents need to know

Educational value

Kids can learn a range of math skills, from numbers and counting to one- and two-digit addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Each of the sections offers practice activities and games to build skills. In the counting section, kids tap on a number to identify how many fish they see on the screen. Other counting activities allow kids to practice counting as high as 100. The arithmetic section lets kids customize practice and games by choosing the operation (+, -, x, or /) and number range. Epic Math offers a fun collection of tools for early math practice, but some of the activities are weak in feedback and support.

Ease of play

In the counting section, not all of the activities have audio instructions to support non-readers, and some activities require reading, which is not the best design for young kids' games. The activities and games in the arithmetic section are easy to figure out, so older kids should have no trouble; however, the layout of the number buttons makes tapping answers a little awkward.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Epic Math is a two-part educational app with a selection of counting activities for young kids and arithmetic games for slightly older kids. Some of the counting activities give instructions in text only, which could be challenging for young kids just learning to read.

What's it about?

Kids choose the "123" tab for counting activities or the "+-x" tab to practice addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. In the counting section, there's an interactive counting book, two practice activities, and four counting games. For arithmetic practice, kids choose an operation (+, -, x, or /) and a range of numbers. They can also play a timed game, answering problems to earn Epicoins, the in-app currency. Kids earn achievements in the arithmetic games for various accomplishments like getting five correct answers in a row.

Is it any good?

QUALITY

EPIC MATH is a fun way for kids to practice counting and basic arithmetic, but it has some weaknesses. Without audio support for pre-readers, the counting activities might be confusing. The arithmetic games are simple and a good way to reinforce math skills; however, when kids enter a correct answer, the number never displays -- the app jumps right to the next problem. Displaying the correct answer even briefly would help reinforce learning.

To its credit, the app does engage kids in counting and math practice. Parents can boost learning by guiding young kids in the counting activities and helping older kids set up customized practice in the arithmetic activities. And the "Toy Store" provides motivation for kids to play longer in order to earn Epicoins, which they can use to purchase just-for-fun mini-games and new backgrounds.

Families can talk about...

  • Provide assistance for your kids when they play Epic Math; young kids will need reinforcement during the counting activities, and older kids might need help figuring out the customization options.

  • Encourage your kids to try out other fun math games; see our list of Best Math Apps and Learning Tools for ideas.
