Fashion Math App Poster Image

Fashion Math

Dress-up app gives girls a flash card alternative.

What parents need to know

Educational value

Kids who are resistant to math but like fashion can learn their basic math facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) through drills that earn points to "buy" fashion outfits for an online doll. Kids who are interested in fashion can also be creative by pulling the outfits together with all the choices on the app. Fashion Math may help some kids get motivated to memorize their basic math facts, but the simple flashcards don't encourage deeper learning.

Ease of play

Clear directions. Immediate feedback on incorrect or correct answers. Easy to understand point system.

Sexy stuff

Before you begin to dress her up, this app's stick thin doll is dressed only in a teeny-weeny bikini.

Banner ads appear on the screen in this free version; upgrading to the paid version will eliminate the ads. The object of the games is for players to answer math facts in order to earn credits to "buy" dress-up items for the doll on this app, but players are not spending real money.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Fashion Math is a game for elementary school-age girls who love fashion and may or may not like math. Solve equations in the four basic math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) to earn credits. Then "buy" items including dresses and hairstyles for dressing the app's doll. Choose your child's current skill level by setting the highest number that can be tested and by choosing the mathematical operation. The $1.99 version, called Fashion Math Pro, includes 250 more dress up choices and no ads.

What's it about?

First, kids choose addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division, and customize the math problems by setting the highest number that can be used (5-99). Kids can practice with or without a timer and earn points they can use to dress up a doll. To answer the questions, simply tap on one of the multiple choice-style answer choices. FASHION MATH provides immediate feedback on incorrect or correct answers. Players can see their point totals so they know how many points they have to buy clothes, which are also listed with points.

Is it any good?

Fashion Math -- a decidedly sparkly, pink, and ruffly app -- may be just the thing to encourage many girls to love studying math skills. Especially for girls who hate flash cards, this game makes learning basics such as times tables much more fun. The simple game isn't much different from flash cards with automated applause, but the reward of playing dress-up with the app's doll mixes creative play in with rote math drills. On the downside, there are ads in the free version; a dress-up doll with a more realistically sized body would also be an improvement. But overall, it's a good way to make math practice fun.

Families can talk about...

  • Make sure the settings are adapted to your kids' current math levels to avoid frustration. Once they've mastered those facts, move onto larger numbers.

  • If your kids want to show off their fashion creations, be enthusiastic! The fashion is the motivator for math practice here.
