Polished soccer simulator faithfully re-creates game.

What parents need to know

Educational value

Kids can learn the basic concepts of teamwork and strategy in FIFA SOCCER 13 -- not to mention the basic rules of soccer. To succeed, kids must move the ball down the field, passing it to teammates and not violating the rules of the game. Young soccer fans can learn some basics and watch how simulated pros play -- and perhaps better their own game.

Ease of play

The control scheme is a familiar one to players, and controlling the ball and players is fairly easy (though not perfect). The game also offers an extensive practice mode, letting players build their skills.

Consumerism

Consumer branding is everywhere in this game, as it is in the actual sport. Stadium banners promote publisher EA Sports, while player uniforms have company names and logos on them, such as Herbalife, Samsung, and Red Bull.

Drinking, drugs, & smoking

One team's jersey promotes Corona beer.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that FIFA SOCCER 13 by EA SPORTS is a sports simulation game that very closely follows the real-world rules of the popular sport. There's no violence or foul language -- and while one team's jerseys advertise Corona beer on them, there's nothing actually encouraging the brand. The corporate sponsorships are simply a part of the game.

What's it about?

FIFA SOCCER 13 is a very realistic simulation of the world's most popular sport, faithfully re-creating the game and just as faithfully following its rules. Teammates pass the ball back and forth via a virtual joystick or swipe controls, which open up special shots. Additional buttons on the screen's right hand side are used to sprint, take shots on goal, or slide tackle opposing team members. The game re-creates the championships of 30 of the sport's most popular leagues.

QUALITY

FIFA SOCCER 13, in many ways, is a lot like FIFA SOCCER 12 -- but that's not a bad thing. The game is once again well-polished and boasts a dramatically improved graphics engine this year. Physics have also been tweaked to improve ball momentum and player collisions. They're small improvements, but fans will welcome them.

The game is still a bit intimidating for newcomers, though, given the sheer number of things to do and the number of control options on screen. But it's never repetitive, offers several difficulty modes, and offers plenty of tutorial cues. Among sports games, it's one of the best.

Families can talk about...

  • See if the game sparks an increased interest in real-world soccer, and if so, take kids to a game.

  • Steer kids who tend to be sedentary to this game to show them the thrill of running up and down a field, playing with others.

  • Ask kids to describe a time when they had to use teamwork to accomplish a goal -- sports-related or otherwise.
