What parents need to know

Educational value

Teens can learn many ways to exercise by using this app's videos. Classes range from 10 to 90 minutes and include a range of fitness activities, from kickboxing to yoga. Teens can also learn how different components of exercise translate into better performance in sports and better overall fitness. Users practice good listening skills, identify strengths and weaknesses, and learn body awareness. Though the app doesn't give users the most in-depth learning experience, the multitude of workout options provides FitnessClass users with excellent tools to increase fitness levels on their own time.

Ease of play

The app is easy to navigate between the various sections, based on type of workout, free vs. paid, duration, and so on.

Classes include samurai sword workouts, kickboxing, and other martial arts, but there's no actual fighting.

Some of the male and female instructors wear tight and/or revealing clothing.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that FitnessClass is basically a video store to rent or buy fitness videos from PumpOne. There are some free videos and preview videos for all of them, but parents should be aware that in-app purchases are where this company makes its money. Videos range from weight training and cardio to stretching and kick-boxing to pilates and yoga, with both male and female instructors.

Is it any good?

FITNESSCLASS is a video-centric marketplace that houses more than 250 fitness classes by PumpOne -- from cardio to weights to yoga exercises -- that can be streamed over Wi-Fi or 3G. Choose what kind of a workout you want and the duration (from 10 to 90 minutes), and read user comments and estimated calories burned before paying for the individual classes. You can watch a video preview, listen to your own music, keep track of every workout you perform, and post your completed status to Facebook and Twitter. While there are several free classes, most in-app classes cost between $3 to $8 for a 30-day unlimited pass, or you can purchase them outright for $5 to $13, on average.
