The parents' guide to what's in this app.

Educational Value

Kids can learn important social and emotional learning skills from watching and using the discussion questions. Characters interact in engaging, real-life scenarios and exaggerate facial expressions and body language to respond to problems or uncomfortable responses. When utilizing the discussion option, questions help kids reflect with the characters on how they're feeling compared to the others in the scene, though an adult will need to either ask the questions or facilitate a discussion with a group of kids. Though more interactive features would let kids engage with the material in different ways, Flummox and Friends in FlummoxVision - Watch Flummox and Friends on your iPad successfully blends entertainment and education about important social skills.

Ease of Play

The platform is similar to other playback video tools, and the features are easily accessible, are easy to use, and do not take away from the video playback.

What's it about?

When beginning FLUMMOXVISION - WATCH FLUMMOX AND FRIENDS ON YOUR IPAD, the screen opens to a list of available video content at the bottom, where users can scroll through which episode they would like to view. The pilot is free, while others cost $1.99. Once selected, the video follows five characters who navigate a social problem. Kids or parents can slide icons at the bottom of the screen to turn on subtitles or discussions for every episode. If selected, discussion questions ask viewers to take on the perspective of other characters, relate to events that happen within the plot, and make decisions on how they would react if they were in the same situation. Short musical videos that reinforce social skills (such as having reciprocal conversations or being aware of emotions) are also embedded in the playback as a break from the story line.

Is it any good?

The characters are portrayed by professional actors who present a well-developed story line in a way that is both engaging to kids and meaningful for social learning. The biggest strength is how well the videos walk the line between informative and funny: Kids will be able to get the humor and pick up on the social tips, and they'll likely want to watch more. Highlighting the social skills addressed in each episode, the preloaded discussion questions can provide important practice identifying social cues such as body language or facial expression whether used with one kid or a group, though it's up to a parent to make the most of the questions and get a real discussion going. Offering more interactive features, quizzes, or games would take this app to the next level, but as it stands, it's a unique and quality app.

Talk to your kids about ...

  • Families can talk about Flummox and his friends. Ask kids to decide who their favorite characters are, what they would do if they were in their shoes, or whether kids can relate to the situations the characters are in.

  • Parents can use the discussion questions embedded in the video playback to start longer conversations about social problems. For instance, in the pilot, Wanda asks, "Do you ever get so excited about your ideas that you have trouble tuning in to other people?" Parents might use this same question when they feel their kids have seemingly ignored another's contribution to the conversation.
