The parents' guide to what's in this app.

Educational Value

Kids can learn about fractions using models and numerical representations. They begin by using models to build an understanding of fractions as parts of a whole. As they progress through the game, kids learn to identify numerators and denominators and then the actual fractions that are being modeled. Multiple fractions and more complex fractions are introduced in later levels. If kids struggle to complete a problem, they can access visual cues and hints. Constructive feedback is given for incorrect solutions. As far as digital math tools go, Fruity Fractions does an excellent job of building core concepts and adapting to a kid's learning level.

Ease of Play

Using features such as dragging and tapping is simple, though sometimes delayed. Somewhat slow to load pages when moving from one activity or screen to another.

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Fruity Fractions uses fun fruit models to teach kids about fractions. They slice fruits into equal parts, put the pieces back together to make a whole, and eventually learn to identify fractions represented numerically. As kids play, they unlock portions of a fun, jungle-themed story in which Quip and other parrots are hungry for some tropical fruits. Instructional support and hints are offered throughout, and kids earn lightning-bolt rewards for answering questions correctly.

What's it about?

FRUITY FRACTIONS is a 50-level, story-based game set in a jungle with parrots who are hungry for tropical fruit. Learning about fractions can help the parrots share the fruit equally. Through the use of models, kids start by learning the basic concept that a fraction is a part of a whole, and levels increase in difficulty as kids progress. They identify fruit that is sliced into equal parts, identify the number of parts that make a whole, and drag slices of fruit into place to model specific fractions. A timer tracks how long it takes to complete each level, and kids can tap a light bulb icon to access hints. Up to three lightning-bolt rewards are given for each correct answer. A parent section includes learning tips, contact information, ads for other apps, and a privacy policy.

Is it any good?

Kids slice, dice, and drag their way through increasingly difficult levels that show what fractions really represent, allowing for deeper understanding. The use of models is a great way for kids to understand that a fraction represents part of a whole, and the game seamlessly progresses from fairly simple to more complex concepts. Hints and feedback are constructive and support learning, which encourages kids to solve the problems on their own. Kids can easily view the number of levels they have completed, but it would be handy if they could track and display their rewards as well. The ability to view a more detailed progress summary also would be a nice upgrade. And, though the levels provide some variety, and the videos break up the levels, varying the learning approach slightly also might keep more reluctant kids coming back.

Talk to your kids about ...

  • Families can talk about fractions that are important in everyday life. Ask kids to come up with specific examples of how they use fractions.

  • Draw models of different fractions and ask kids to identify the numerators and denominators. Introduce equivalent fractions (such as 1/2 and 2/4) with more advanced kids.

  • Review the Learning tab of the parent section for tips and extension ideas.
