What parents need to know

Educational value

Kids can learn a variety of geography-centered facts through trivia clues. While topics range from sports to history, answers always require kids to pinpoint a location on a map of the world. Georific can help kids build trivia knowledge on different topics as well as improve their geography skills. The map shows a topical view, so kids have to know what location to search for as well as recognize shapes of continents, countries, and states. Georific doesn't provide explicit geography instruction or teach trivia topics, but it's a fun way for kids to test their geography knowledge.

Ease of play

A tutorial explains how to play, and the menu is intuitive. There's a local multiplayer option. Many of the trivia questions are quite challenging, even in the easy game mode. Questions are similar in the intermediate and difficult game modes, but there's less room for error. Hints are available a few times in each game. Screenshots of good answers can be saved to the camera roll or shared on Facebook, and high scores can be submitted to the Game Center.

Some questions ask about violent historical events, such as assassinations or deaths.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Georific is a challenging trivia game with an option to share correct answers on Facebook. Players can select single or local multiplayer mode, three difficulty levels, and seven question categories, such as music or sports. Players are then presented with a map and a question, such as the birthplace of a sports player. Players must pinpoint their answer on the map, which is then scored by its proximity to the correct answer. Users can share high scores via the Game Center social network, but participation is optional. Mature content is limited, but younger kids might be discouraged by not knowing the answers to obscure trivia.

What's it about?

In Georific, kids answer trivia questions to pinpoint a location in the world. They earn points by how close they get to the actual location. Pressing the hint button narrows down the location. There are three levels of difficulty, and kids can choose a topic to focus on. In multiplayer mode, it's best out of 10 questions, and the player who gets closest to the location wins the point. It's cool when the app zooms to the correct location, as kids can judge for themselves how far off their answer was.

Is it any good?

Georific puts a fun spin on typical trivia games. Zooming around the world with clear graphics from the NASA Earth Observatory makes geography exciting, and the multiplayer option provides an element of friendly competition. If kids play just one category, questions tend to repeat, so this game is best for kids with varied interests.
