# GeoSpin HD

## Learning(i)

Challenging geometric puzzler requires quick reflexes.

## What parents need to know

Ease of play

A tutorial explains how to play the three modes, and the controls are very intuitive: Swipe the solid in the center of the screen to turn it, or slide a shape from the edges onto the correct surface. However, it's sometimes easy to grab a shape when you mean to rotate the solid and vice versa.

## Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that GeoSpin HD is a puzzle game that involves matching shapes to their corresponding surfaces on a geometric solid. This challenging, fun game isn't necessarily educational but does require some logic and spatial-recognition skills and gives the names of the various solids shown. Kids will deconstruct and reconstruct a tetrahedron, building a better understanding of it in the process: Spatial reasoning is an important skill in computer science, physics, and math, and this is a fun way to jumpstart a bit of learning while having fun.

## Engagement

With bright colors and pleasing geometric shapes, GeoSpin HD's puzzle challenges should keep kids interested. Design is intuitive but occasionally requires very precise motor control to get the results you want.

## Learning Approach

Kids will see and explore, in three dimensions, the truncated tetrahedron. They'll deconstruct and reconstruct this figure and build a better understanding of it in the process. Spatial reasoning is an important skill in computer science, physics, and math. GeoSpin offers two modes of play: time attack or score attack. The difficulty increases as new levels are unlocked.

## Support

Aside from the in-game instruction, there's no support. (The game's webpage states that if you want support, send an email. Really?)

### Thinking & Reasoning

• logic
• solving puzzles

Kids can learn geometry and develop spatial reasoning as they view and rotate a three-dimensional object made up of various two-dimensional shapes. The challenge comes in working against the clock or as quickly as possible to build a high score. The app is pretty simple, and the game doesn't have too much depth, educationally. GeoSpin is a fun, intuitive app that develops spatial reasoning often overlooked in educational games.

## Kids say

You're presented with a geometric solid with various colors on its faces. Around the edges of the screen are colored shapes, which you need to match to the corresponding faces of the solid. Swipe to rotate the solid, then drag the shapes onto the solid. GeoSpin offers two modes of play: time attack or score attack. For both, difficulty increases as new levels are unlocked. Time attack mode challenges you to complete each puzzle in as little time as possible. Score attack has two puzzle styles: In one you need to finish shapes before time runs out and get bonus points for combos. In the other, you have a blank solid and place the colored surfaces on it; get enough of the same-color surfaces touching each other, and they'll vanish.

## Is it any good?

QUALITY

GEOSPIN HD is a pretty simple idea: Kids match shapes and colors, dragging the two-dimensional shape onto the three-dimensional, rotating shape. It sounds basic, but kids are working against the clock, adding pressure. For an added challenge, kids can gain bonus points for solving the puzzle, which means completing the 3-D shape in certain color and shape orders.

Although the idea is simple, it'll take sharp eyes and quick reflexes to get gold medals on all the levels. The fact that it's timed adds to the challenge; when you're moving quickly it can be very easy to drag a shape when you intend to rotate the solid -- and an incorrect match adds two seconds to your time, which can cost you a medal. Ack! It's all about precision. GeoSpin is loads of fun and looks great on the iPad.

• Families can talk about geometric shapes. Where do they appear in the real world? Challenge kids to draw some of the shapes they encounter in GeoSpin.

• Give kids access to building materials such as blocks or magnetic building shapes to develop spatial reasoning.
