Grover's Number Special

Kids count and play in fun -- and funny -- Sesame game.

What parents need to know

Educational value

Kids will learn numbers, counting, and numeral recognition with Grover's Number Special. The app is pretty basic, changing only in the different scenarios of meals that Grover creates for his grumpy customer being assembled as Grover counts, but it is just right for the preschool crowd. Kids will be able to play and learn with this app with minimal parental involvement. Kids will also build some pre-reading skills as they identify and match the ingredient they'll need to catch in order to make soup, pizza, salad, and more. Young preschoolers will enjoy Sesame Street characters and humor as they learn to count with this adorable app.

Ease of play

The game is designed so that it is impossible to fail.

Violence & scariness

There's some slapstick with Grover tripping, falling, and spilling food.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Grover's Number Special is a funny preschool app that utilizes real video footage of Sesame Street muppets. Grover stars, in his recurring role as a fumbling waiter. He repeatedly attempts to serve lunch to his perpetually disgruntled customer (that blue-headed muppet guy with the bushy mustache), but always loses the meal somehow before he gets it to the table. The game part comes in during the meal preparation. Food rains down from the sky and kids slide Grover's tray back and forth in order to catch the correct ingredients for the ordered meal. Kids move the tray by tilting the device. Kids can't fail, and if an incorrect ingredient hits the tray, it simply bounces off.

What's it about?

Grover needs your kid's help as he prepares lunch for the grumpy customer at the restaurant. Grover recommends the special, and then asks for the kid's assistance in putting together the meal. He tells the number of each ingredient needed, and kids tilt the device to catch the falling items on a try. The wrong items just bounce off, and kids catch while Grover counts. Unfortunately, and humorously, something goes wrong with each meal, and then Grover needs the kids help again to make another.

Is it any good?

GROVER'S NUMBER SPECIAL is a very polished looking, very fun app for preschoolers. The genuinely funny video segments are a joy -- and there are enough of them to keep repetition to a minimum. And they're strung together rather seamlessly with the game, making Grover's attempt to serve lunch into a never-ending task. The game itself is incredibly simple, but as it's aimed at 3-year-olds, that's perfect.

Families can talk about...

  • Play your own live version of Grover's Number Special at breakfast or lunch. Count each item as you put it on the plate and have your kid serve it like a server in a restaurant.

  • Incorporate counting into daily activities, such as counting the steps to buckling your child into the car seat.

Pass on this app

This app is a waste of money. It is expensive for a kids app and doesn't have a lot of educational value. It doesn't hold my 3 yr. old's attention for long.
