Guess! App Poster Image

Social word game similar to Draw Something but not as fun.

Ease of play

The gameplay is fairly straightforward. It's guessing the words that's hard.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Guess! is a word guessing game that is played with (and against) others, in a similar vein as Draw Something. While the game is fun to play with people you know, players can also compete with strangers online, which could expose them to inappropriate language. The game promotes vocabulary, and children might want to play -- but if they do so, it should be under close supervision. The game also offers in-app purchases using real-world cash, but they are not essential. The free version of the app includes heavy advertising.

What's it about?

Players must write clues for words, but are restricted in the hints they can give. For instance, the word might be \"Santa,\" but they're not allowed to use the words \"Kringle,\" \"Christmas,\" or \"reindeer.\" If the person they are playing with guesses the word, they both get coins. The game goes in rounds, with each player taking a turn at writing hints. Coins can be used to buy other words when none of the choices is appealing.

Is it any good?

Guess! is, in many ways, the love child of the old game show Password and Draw Something, so it's a tried and tested formula. And the game is certainly fun, but it's not perfect.

Finding a friend to play with isn't as easy as it is in Zynga's "With Friends" games -- and random opponents are hit and miss. (In our testing, we found some nice people and some really offensive ones.) Ultimately, though, typing out hints is a little less fun than drawing them, so the game doesn't have the fun factor it's aiming for.
