What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Halftone 2 – Comic Book Creator is a fun way for kids to share a story, turning a series of photos into a comics-style collage. You can make use of the existing templates to break down your story’s beginning, middle, and end. Adding photos may help kids visualize their narrative and make it easier to add details as they begin to write their stories, which can be true or fictional. Of course, classic collage and scrapbooking provide an analog version of this, but kids who have access to devices likely will find this app much more engaging. Plus, having sample comics and templates available makes getting started much easier for those with writer's block.

What's it about?

HALFTONE 2 - COMIC BOOK CREATOR is an easy-to-use resource for creating comics. Kids can work together or individually using the ready-made templates to tell their story. Begin by taking a brief tour through an introductory tutorial and land on the home page with some example comics. The app comes preloaded with comics as a source of inspiration. Once kids click on a comic, they’ll quickly find how easy it is to make modifications, transforming the samples into their own comic creations. Halftone 2, the sequel to Halftone, emphasizes touch features with a design that makes adding text to photos intuitive.

Is it any good?

Transforming your photos into comics can be fun, and there’s potential to get kids thinking about building a narrative. Kids could use this app to learn about photography (composition, lighting, and presentation), but it’s more likely that Halftone 2 – Comic Book Creator is best used as a way for kids to develop a story. The edit tools are easy to use, allowing kids to add their own photos and text to existing templates. Touch features make the edit tools intuitive enough for young kids while engaging enough to maintain the interest of older kids. Comics remain in the gallery on the homepage and can easily be shared via social media, saved to the camera, or printed.

Talk to your kids about ...

  • Families can talk about building a story from beginning to end. What does a compelling story need to contain (character, conflict, resolution)?

  • You also can talk about capturing photos that tell a story. What's the difference between taking a single photo of an event vs. taking many over time?
