The parents' guide to what's in this app.

Educational Value

Hero's Duty Interactive Comic wasn't created with educational intent, and we don't recommend it for learning.

Ease of Play

Touching the screen advances the story. Readers can tap "menu" to select specific pages.

While it's just a comic book, it displays a near nonstop battle, with guns, lasers, and beat-downs with soldier's helmets -- along with several life-threatening situations for characters.

Occasional use of the word "hell."

The app is a marketing vehicle for the film Wreck-It Ralph -- telling the prequel story to one of the games in the film. The credits page has ads for other apps that when tapped take you to iTunes for purchase.

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Hero's Duty Interactive Comic is a comic book app that tells the pre-story for a "game" featured in the Wreck-It Ralph film. There is frequent violence, though not graphic and not worse than most comics on the market today; however, the comic is supplemented with sound effects and a soundtrack. A few characters say "hell," which might catch some parents off guard. The entire app is a promotional vehicle for the movie.

What's it about?

HERO'S DUTY INTERACTIVE COMIC tells the back story of one of the games in Disney's Wreck-It Ralph. Readers advance the comic one frame at a time by touching the screen, or they can use an autoplay mode. While the app does have music and sound effects, there's no option to hear the text; kids read the text just like in a regular comic book.

Is it any good?

Hero's Duty Interactive Comic tells the back story of the Hero's Duty game featured in Wreck-It Ralph, but in doing so it supplements the movie, rather than regurgitating plot elements like so many tie-ins do. The sound effects and soundtrack that accompany each frame add to the story as well, making it more dramatic and exciting for readers, adding an aspect to the experience readers don't get with traditional comic books.

While the overall experience feels a little basic for the platform, Hero's Duty Interactive Comic does offer a fun tie-in that will please most Wreck-It Ralph fans.
