A lot or a little?

The parents' guide to what's in this app.

Educational Value

Kids can learn a little bit about a lot of topics. From a random selection of new content delivered every day, kids may listen to some jokes, learn about electric cars or how a star blows up, read an ebook about animals or volcanoes, test their knowledge of bugs, and complete a hidden-pictures puzzle. Advice videos give kids a peek into possible solutions to common kid issues, such as how to keep in touch with a good friend who moves away. Puzzles put kids' visual scanning and attention skills to the test. Highlights Every Day by Highlights is a digital magazine that offers a quick overview of a wide variety of kid-friendly content.

Ease of Play

Content is presented clearly, and it's easy for kids to tap into what interests them.

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Highlights Every Day by Highlights is a subscription-based service that delivers new puzzles, videos, ebooks, and other kid-friendly content on a daily basis. Content is much like what kids can find in the traditional, long-running Highlights magazine, with a digital twist. The app is a free download and includes a very limited amount of content for free. To get the full content, there's a seven-day free trial, after which parents will need to pay for a subscription. Read the developer's privacy policy for details on how your information is collected and shared.

What's it about?

HIGHLIGHTS EVERY DAY BY HIGHLIGHTS offers kid-friendly puzzles, books, videos, and quizzes. Puzzles are mostly the Highlights classics in which kids must find hidden items or pick out what's different between two seemingly identical images. Videos are a mix of informative clips, with kids responding to advice column questions, jokes, crafts, and more. When reading the short ebooks, kids can choose to read or be read to from a variety of genres. Quizzes test knowledge or help identify things like what kind of animal you'd be. Each day -- if you subscribe -- five new "gifts" or pieces of content are delivered to your device.

Is it any good?

Language, topics, and content are all right up a kid's alley with a good mix of fun, informative, and playful things to do and watch. The presentation is clean, and it's easy for kids to navigate through the content, filter by type of content, and mark their favorite things. Yet, some pieces are better than others: The hidden picture puzzles are great fun, but it would be nice to see more variety in type of puzzle. While there are interactive elements, some elements are more like a traditional magazine experience that kids passively consume. There's no doubt that kids will enjoy the content, but it'll be great to see an even more creative use of the digital platform as it evolves, especially for the price.

Talk to your kids about ...

  • Families can talk about reading. Do they like to read the ebooks to themselves or listen to them as they follow along? Why? Take reading offscreen and find books that tap into your kid's interests.

  • Discuss the topics that are covered in the magazine. When kids find something that interests them, help them learn more about it.

  • Watch the advice videos together. Ask kids what advice they would give. What do they think about the solutions the kids on the video gave?
