Ease of Play

The app works just like the Hidden Pictures puzzles in the Highlights magazine. Hints are available to help if you're stuck.

The main page has buttons that link to both the publisher and the magazine, as well as a large button for downloading (purchasing) new puzzles. In addition, the "More Puzzles" button for purchasing appears prominently throughout the menu pages. Also, you can download two "free" puzzles which then require you to register for their email newsletter.

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Highlights Hidden Pictures is a simple search-and-find game made slightly more difficult by playing on a small screen (but easier if played on an iPad). As players find the hidden objects, they are highlighted in color. Once the puzzle is complete, the entire picture is filled with color. The game comes with 8 puzzles. It is easy (for adults and kids) to purchase additional puzzles from within the app, as well as to navigate off the app and onto the web. Parents might want to consider turning off in-game app purchases by disabling that option on the device through the settings menu.

Is it any good?

HIGHLIGHTS HIDDEN PICTURES is a seek-and-find puzzle app that is challenging for kids of all ages. Kids are shown objects to find within child-friendly pictures. The controls are intuitive to use, allowing kids to zoom in or out as necessary. Plus hints are available showing the specific area to look if you are stumped. The app may be overly commercial for some families and it is easy for kids to hit the button to buy additional puzzles, but the game itself is worth the price.
