Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that Highlights Hidden Pictures Puzzles brings the classic brain-game from the magazine to the tablet. With the tablet, though, kids can see the picture come to life, get hints, and have dozens of puzzles all in one place. The puzzles are categorized by theme, and kids get achievement awards for completing the puzzles.
What's it about?
HIGHLIGHTS HIDDEN PICTURES PUZZLES features dozens of picture puzzles for kids to search for hidden objects. The puzzles are grouped thematically and start with black-and-white images with a list of objects to find. Kids tap the objects as they find them in the picture, and they convert to full color. Once kids have found all the hidden objects, the whole picture colorizes. Hints let you zoom in on the area of the picture the object is in. Kids also have the option to hide the list of objects to find to increase the challenge.
Is it any good?
The brain-teasing fun of hidden objects puzzles is even better on a tablet! Tap the object, and it colorizes, so kids know they found it. They can turn off clues (the list of objects to find) to increase their challenge or get a hint if they need one. Tapping the objects is very responsive, though finding them is just as tricky as on paper. The hints are hit or miss, sometimes zooming in on the wrong area. With nine puzzles in each category (seven categories at the time of review), there is plenty of content to keep kids smartly challenged. The achievement awards motivate kids to keep going -- trying to complete one or five or 50 puzzles and then trying to complete that many without hints -- by merely recognizing the accomplishment. The reward is in the doing.
Families can talk about...
Hidden puzzles are a great side-by-side activity to do with kids, working together to find all the hidden objects. Parents can keep their visual acuity and memory sharp, too, playing alongside the kids.
Challenge kids to work a puzzle with no hints -- even if it means stopping and coming back later.
