Hopscotch: Learn to Code Through Creativity

Easy-to-use visual tool makes programming fun and social.

What parents need to know

Educational value

Visual blocks of code scaffold learning to code for kids, allowing them to grasp the logic and steps of coding without actually writing code. They'll see immediate results and can share their creations.

Ease of play

Kids simply drag and drop to create programs, but there's not much how-to given. Kids are left to explore and figure it out after a brief example.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Hopscotch: Learn to Code Through Creativity is a drag-and-drop programming app for kids to write their own programs plus a community for sharing creations, playing or remixing others' creations, and commenting on and supporting other programmers. The app is free to use, but a monthly subscription unlocks features including the option to add your own images and customize profiles. To register, kids set a username and password and give an email address (a parent's email for kids under 13). The privacy policy spells out how information collected could be shared and explains how to opt out (by uninstalling the app).

What's it about?

Kids create games and animations with HOPSCOTCH: LEARN TO CODE THROUGH CREATIVITY by dragging and dropping commands and instructions into a script. Kids choose characters -- colorful monsters or animals  or their own images with a subscription -- and customize commands to make the characters move where they want or do what they want. They can start from a blank project or build on a starter game. Kids can share their programs with others via a link or on the Hopscotch community board in-app and play, remix (change up), or comment on projects created by other users.

Is it any good?

Social media-style sharing and easy-to-adapt visuals simplify coding and how it can be used. Kids don't have to worry about missing intricate details such as a closing parenthesis just yet, but they can see how each command is carried out and the importance of each step and its placement. The community features some great examples of what kids can create, along with some not-so-stellar examples, as everything uploaded appears instantly with no moderation. At the time of review, there was was no objectionable content in the programs, but it's certainly a possibility in an unmoderated community.

Families can talk about...

  • Once kids have mastered Hopscotch: Learn to Code Through Creativity, they can try MIT's online application development tool, Scratch.

  • Talk to kids about being safe in online communities by not sharing personal details.

  • Start kids off with step-by-step logic apps such as Kodable Pro or Tynker and then move them to Hopscotch: Learn to Code Through Creativity to create their own programs.

My kids love it but I'm concerned

Overall this is a great app. My kids love making projects on it. The concern I have is with the ability to post pages for other users to "sign". My daughter has mentioned that she has communicated back & forth w some users in this way. Doesn't seem very safe. We are trying to be vigilant but if it becomes problematic, this app will have to go.

Hopscotch Gives A Good Taste Of Coding To Beginners and Experienced Coders Alike!

Hopscotch is a fun game that lets you become a coder, fast! There are fun characters, cool sounds and movements, and you are in a (almost entirely) positive community! While the game may be hard for some, most people should be able to understand how to make even the simplest lines of code. Hopscotch is great for school, home, and other places. I would recommend it to anyone who has though of (or wants to) become a coder!
