What parents need to know

Educational value

Kids can learn numbers, counting, quantities, and sequencing in Intro to Math, by Montessorium. With the Montessori approach, kids try multiple ways of connecting abstract math concepts to real-world examples. They also develop thinking and reasoning skills as they progress through each activity. Intro to Math, by Montessorium combines highly regarded teaching methods with an engaging app design for a solid learning experience.

Ease of play

Intro to Math, by Montessorium is generally easy enough for kids to figure out without instruction. There are, however, a couple of places in which a little bit of explanation would have been helpful. Trial-and-error is, we suppose, part of the process, though.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Intro to Math, by Montessorium is an early education math lesson taught through the game-like manipulation of objects on the screen. Kids are presented with several different approaches to numbers: The number three for example, may be represented by the numeral 3, three dots, or a stick three segments long. Kids move the items around and place them in various orders. Eventually the different representations of the numbers are mixed and integrated with one another.

What's it about?

Kids interact with virtual colored rods, numeral cards, counters, and sandpaper numbers -- all represeting actual tools used for teaching early math skills in Montessori settings. Five activities promote learning numbers and counting through play and exploration. Kids drag rods of different lengths, match numerals to quantities, put numbers and quantities in order, and trace number symbols. Audio narration leads kids through each activity, and visual clues offer guidance and hints.

Is it any good?

QUALITY

Intro to Math, by Montessorium has both a gorgeous design aesthetic and a wonderfully varied approach to early arithmetic. Kids won't get bored by drills as they trace numerals, count dots, stack bars of different lengths, and so on. The app's diversity is a great way to keep very young kids interested, and the more they play around with the app, the more likely it is that the number concepts will be carried over into preschool or kindergarten.

Families can talk about...

  • Encourage kids to follow through with an entire activity before moving to the next; some activities have multiple parts that build on one another.

  • Practice numbers, quantities, counting, and sequencing with your child using real counters, numeral cards, numbered rods, and sandpaper numbers.
