What’s It About?

ISTOPMOTION FOR IPAD is a photo and video stop-motion animation tool that is very easy to use. In terms of standard functionality, you can use either the front or back camera and access grid lines, instant playback, overlaying (onion-skinning), time-lapse mode, and selectable frame deletion. In addition to the basic functionalities of other tools, it also features more uncommon functions such as settings that allow for tight control over focus and exposure. Kids can add audio before or after recording and sync the movie to the sound. Once finished, users can share to YouTube, email, Dropbox, and the camera roll or export to iMovie for further and deeper editing. By connecting an iPad to an iPhone (4 or later) or iPod Touch (4th generation or later) via Wi-Fi, kids can use the remote shooting feature.

Whether they're creating visual presentations or simply movies for fun, kids will have all the tools necessary to see their imaginations and learning come to life. With such sharing versatility, kids will also be able to easily enjoy each others' work and learn from each other. Also, kids will love creating movies that are synced to soundtracks. One drawback is that a kid can't copy and paste frames, snd there's no manual focus, but these are relatively small hitches in comparison to the wealth of options.

  • Families can talk about the advantages and disadvantages of stop-motion animation in comparison to live-action. What kinds of movies would best benefit from stop-motion animation? What other uses might there be for this kind of content creation?

  • Talk about the importance of planning and outlining projects, and encourage kids to plan outlines and storyboards before they start filming. 

  • Watch an age-appropriate movie that uses stop-motion animation -- Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, for example -- and talk about the process.
