What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Josh & Emma Go to the Beach is an educational app for very young kids focusing on reading and basic math. The stories are read aloud, but words are not highlighted as they're spoken. The heart of the app is helping Josh and Emma put common beach items, such as shells and starfish, in their bucket -- and the app counts the items as they're picked up. Children can also touch items on screen to have them described (i.e. "the sun is hot and yellow"). Read the app's privacy policy to find out about the types of information collected and shared.

What's it about?

JOSH & EMMA GO TO THE BEACH features the two characters having adventures and making discoveries. Along the way, kids get come exposure to counting, animals, and shapes. Two stories are available for free, and parents can purchase three more for $1.99 via in-app purchase. Kids can have a child narrator read the stories to them, if they wish.

Is it any good?

This free-to try preschool reader offers some gentle stories for little ones. Since Josh & Emma Go to the Beach offers two stories for free, parents can try it out before purchasing all of the stories. The graphics that accompany the story are nice, but children aren't likely to be engaged more than one or two times. However, for kids who need -- or prefer -- apps with less stimulation and few distractions, this one is a solid (and free) choice.
