Educational value

Kids can learn to recognize and spell basic words. Little Speller pairs each word with a picture so kids can associate the word with an image. Kids also have to arrange the letters to spell out the word. They can get tons of practice with both upper- and lowercase letters and improve their skills as parents can gradually take away the visual and audio hints. Parents can also select or add on specific words kids need to practice more. Little Speller is a straightforward app that can target kids with a range of skills with its many customization options.

What's it about?

In Little Speller, kids can see a picture with some letters jumbled up. They have to rearrange the letters to spell the word the picture depicts. Parents can set it so kids have to spell the word in order or not or see upper- or lowercase letters; the options are seemingly limitless. If parents turn off the visual cue (the picture), the app only shows the letters, which makes it challenging to figure out what word can be spelled. Parents and kids can also create flashcards to add their own touch.

Is it any good?

Kids Learning – Little Speller 3 Letter Words is a simple app. Kids scroll through word after word and spell them. Each word is paired with a clear picture (which can be turned off, of course!). There's also clear pronunciation of each letter and word. However, the app does not include any letter sounds to help phonics skills.

For kids who like to look at pictures and spell, this app is great. But it may not be as engaging to kids looking for something that has more game qualities. Again, the strength of Little Speller is in its customizability. Being able to add and edit words increases its range and also lets parents and kids have some fun with it.

Families can talk about...

  • Label and spell words in everyday life. For example, tape a "chair" label to a chair, and a "door" label on a door.

  • Make your home a print-rich environment with books, magazines, and other print publications in your kid's reach.

  • Check in and reset the settings accordingly.
