Kids Paint Free

Bright, random colors engage, but options are limited.

What parents need to know

Educational value

Kids can learn a little bit about creating with technology with Kids Paint Free. There are a few features of the app that kids will find engaging, such as the ability to upload and draw on their own photos. But kids are not empowered to choose the colors they create with. Kids Paint Free is a bright, colorful art app, but it lacks the basic options kids need to truly express themselves creatively.

Ease of play

Drawing on the screen and cycling through colors is simple. The shake-to-clear function can be buggy. Older kids may enjoy taking and selecting photos to draw on, but younger kids will need guidance in the process.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Kids Paint Free is a pretty basic drawing app where kids can create drawings with random colors or draw on photos they take from within the app or existing photos from their device's gallery. Google ads run across the screen constantly on this free app; the paid version is ad-free. Kids can save their creations to their photo gallery; there is no sharing option within the app.

What's it about?

Kids create drawings with random colors (they don't get to select the colors as they paint) on a black or gradient-colored (shades of purple, green, orange, or blue) screen; they can change the background to white in the settings. They can then color cycle their creation, changing its randomly colors by tapping the color wheel. If kids use two fingers, they can create a series of colorful lines. Kids can also take a new picture to draw on, or select one from their gallery. When they're finished, they can save their creation to the device's photo gallery.

Is it any good?

QUALITY

With no tools to change the textures or shapes of lines beyond thick/not thick, and no color choices beyond the limited background choices and the random line colors kids can cycle through, kids are restricted in what they can create on KIDS PAINT FREE. The ability for kids to draw on their own photos expands creativity options somewhat, and the almost-animated look drawings have when cycling through colors is pretty fun to see. The two-finger drawing feature is also fun to see and play around with. But there are many apps (including free ones) that do a better job empowering kids to express their creativity.

Families can talk about...

  • Help younger kids take photos to color in the app, or help them upload photos from the device's gallery.

  • Show your kids how to save their drawings to the device's photo album. Print out some of their creations to display and save.
