A lot or a little?

The parents' guide to what's in this app.

Ease of Play

This app has two skill levels. There is a 3-year-old level with 40 activity cards and a 4- to 5-year-old level with 72 cards. You have one chance to complete each card correctly or the game skips ahead. Although you cycle back around to each card, this can be very frustrating for young kids, especially since the instructions are often vague or confusing. In addition, there are some cards that ask you to touch the differences between two pictures. On a small screen, this is very difficult for small fingers.

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Learn with Bobot is an educational game that may prove too frustrating at the 3-year-old level, and includes some poorly translated instructions. The app's activities include matching like items, finding the biggest or smallest item, recognizing colors and shapes, finding differences between two pictures, and counting items. Kids cycle through a round of 5 to 9 cards that contain one activity each. After kids successfully complete each card in that round, they earn a robot part. Once they earn all of the robot pieces, they earn a "surprise" (they can touch the robot to make it dance). This app was created in Spain, and some of the instructions are lost a bit in translation. For example, one activity asks the child to touch the letter that is "upside-down" when it is actually backwards. Another activity asks the child to choose the correct "shade" for the picture, when it would be more clear to say "shadow."

Is it any good?

LEARN WITH BOBOT is an educational app with a lot of potential. The activities are engaging and educational, and the graphics are colorful and fun. Unfortunately, the poor language translation, annoying/unclear robot instructor, tricky touch sensitivity (on small screens), and murky/vague instructions make it extremely challenging for young kids to play. Children at the youngest end of the target age range may be too frustrated to continue to play. Slightly older kids may need extra help the first time through figuring out the instructions on given tasks and finding some of the minute differences between pictures on comparison tasks. Also, since there are a finite number of activities, the game's re-playability is low.
