The force is weak with this one.

What parents need to know

Educational value

LEGO Star Wars The Yoda Chronicles wasn't created with educational intent, and we don't recommend it for learning.

Ease of play

The game uses the familiar gameplay elements of other LEGO games, which are very easy for players to pick up. Truly difficult challenges are rare, but most units are weak and destoyed often. (Thankfully, making new ones is easy if you've gathered bricks throughout the game.)

Violence & scariness

There are blasters, light sabers, and weaponized machinery, as in any Star Wars game, but it's all cartoonish and no suffering is shown. When "human" characters die, they simply blip away.

Consumerism

The game has advertising that's very in-your-face, sometimes popping up between levels. Players are also referred to the LEGO website to play additional levels. The characters, of course, are from the popular franchise.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that LEGO Star Wars The Yoda Chronicles is a strategy game set in the popular Star Wars universe. "Strategy" is a bit misleading, though, since it's mostly about shooting enemies and occasionally buying new battle droids along the way. The violence is about what you'd expect in a Star Wars game -- light sabers, lasers, and blasters -- but no suffering is shown. The game encourages players to log in to their LEGO ID accounts, but there's no added bonus for doing so.

What's it about?

Players move to different spots on the screen by tapping the spot where they'd like to go, stopping along the way to tap enemies (repeatedly) to fire at them or on kiosks to manufacture more units. All units move or attack as a group, which does away with any real strategic elements.

Is it any good?

QUALITY

LEGO games, historically, have been a lot of fun, if formulaic. LEGO STAR WARS THE YODA CHRONICLES breaks away from that formula somewhat but does so at the expense of the game. Although LEGO games are rarely challenging, this one is overly simplistic and is further cursed with a clunky interface and a weak story.

Whether you play the Jedi or the Sith really doesn't matter, as the missions are the same with the names changed. Either way, you'll face opposition that's not especially hard to beat, though it may take several tries since the game's balance is skewed to the AI. There are plenty of good LEGO games, and this isn't one of them.
