The parents' guide to what's in this app.

Educational Value

Line Surfer wasn't created with educational intent, and we don't recommend it for learning.

Ease of Play

There is only one goal in this game -- tap the screen in time with the oncoming waves to make the stick figure character surf over them. It's very easy to pick up and start playing, but as the waves come in faster and with varying heights and frequency, it becomes more and more difficult to keep up. Because gameplay is tapping only, it may be frustrating for kids used to being able to swipe mobile device screens with a finger to cause motion.

Violence & Scariness

When players fail to time their jump correctly, the stick figure will fall into the water, though there is nothing egregious about this depiction.

Sexy Stuff

There is a link from the app's main menu screen that takes players to apps for purchase from the same developer.

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Line Surfer is a casual action game in which players tap the screen in time with waves to make a stick figure surf. Players have to jump over obstacles and time their jumps such that they do not crash into another, taller oncoming wave. If they do crash, the stick figure falls into the water and the message "Landed head down in the water!" appears. Users can share high scores via OpenFeint and the Game Center social network, but participation is optional.

What's it about?

LINE SURFER is a popular surfing app that allows players to test their surf skills via a stickman who surfs or jumps over waves, avoids obstacles, and performs tricks. There are currently two modes of play: Jump n' Flip, to perform as many flips as possible; and Survival, to get as far as possible in a set about of time.

Is it any good?

LINE SURFER is a fun, easy game that anyone can pick up and play to kill some time. It uses the time-tested gameplay mechanic of having a simple concept that encourages players to play over and over again in order to get the highest score possible. It manages to give players an addicting experience with a very simple control scheme, making it a good, solid title to take on the go.
