A lot or a little?

The parents' guide to what's in this app.

Educational Value

Teens can practice reading, reading comprehension. If they use the website to create comics as well as read them, they can also practice storytelling, creativity.

Ease of Play

Navigation is straightforward, but new users will have to orient themselves to the platform as there's no tutorial and help is in the form of a FAQ.

Some comics depict zombies, suicide, kidnapping, torture, fighting, bloodshed, etc. Content guidelines are in place, but there's no moderation before comics are published.

While graphic content is against the guidelines, expect kissing, partial nudity (blurred as appropriate), mentions of sex, sexual activity without graphic imagery, coercion, risky behavior, etc. No moderation before comics are published.

Profanity appears frequently, but many words are partially obscured or replaced with symbols. There's hostile language, slurs that vary based on the the content (e.g., some are fantasy-based), put-downs, etc. Content guidelines are in place, but there is no moderation before comics are published.

Drinking, Drugs & Smoking

Drinking, drugs, smoking may appear in comics but didn't appear during review as often as other types of mature content. Content guidelines are in place on the site/in the app, but there's no moderation before comics are published.

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Line Webtoon - Daily Comics is a platform for reading and commenting on user-submitted comics/serial graphic novels. The terms of service stipulate that users must be 14+ and that users who are minors must have permission from an appropriate adult (i.e., parent or guardian). The app pairs with a website where users can upload their own content. There are content guidelines that restrict certain types of graphic content, but what's acceptable seems quite broad. In addition, comics are immediately published without going through a moderation process. Inappropriate content can be flagged by users, but may take some time before it's removed. While there are a wide range of comic genres, there's plenty of graphic violence (e.g., hitting a zombie with a golf club and seeing an eyeball pop out), sexuality, language, etc. The comics deal with mature themes overall. Comments are also not moderated and may have inappropriate content before they're flagged. Read the developer's privacy policy for details on how your (or your kids') information is collected, used, and shared and any choices you may have in the matter, and note that privacy policies and terms of service frequently change.

What's it about?

LINE WEBTOON - DAILY COMICS is the companion app to the website of the same name. It functions as an e-reader for the large collection of user-generated serial comics that are uploaded to the site. Kids can browse various genres (romance, fantasy, horror, superhero, sports, sci-fi, thriller, comedy, historical, etc.), subscribe to favorites, and leave comments on each episode. Those who want to share their own comics will need to do so on the website. The app (and site) are Korean, and the content has an overwhelmingly anime flair with quite a lot of fantasy elements. There's no automated moderation to go along with the community guidelines; much of the moderation comes from community reporting.

Is it any good?

For mature fans of serial comics, anime, and graphic novels, this is an absolute feast of storytelling and illustration, but it's not for kids. As with any user-generated content, Line Webtoon - Daily Comics has a range of quality, but there are certainly stories to match a wide range of interests. The platform is easy to use and understand and there's a lot of community engagement, including users who help translate comics into other languages. With all that said, this is a platform with mature content intended for mature readers and it behaves accordingly. Moderation relies heavily on user reporting, and there seems to be no one watching to make sure users are being kind to authors or each other unless someone reports otherwise. It's highly recommended, just not for kids.

Talk to your kids about ...

  • Families can talk about the relationships depicted in comics in Line Webtoon - Daily Comics. What are behaviors you expect to see from friends and romantic partners in real life? What are behaviors that aren't acceptable for you? What can you do if a friend or romanic partner displays unacceptable behavior?

  • Talk about violence in the comics and media in general. How much is too much? Does it affect people's face-to-face interactions?

  • Discuss community moderation. What can you do if you see something that you think is inappropriate for the community? What do you do if you receive or see comments that are threatening or too personal? How can you make sure your contributions to the community are appropriate and within guidelines?
