Ease of Play

To turn pages, kids must swipe the narrow the text stripe at the bottom of the page. Since this app is a universal app, and thus can be viewed on an iPod or an iPhone, if you try to turn pages on these smaller devices, it can be a very small area and may be too hard for some kids. The Help Me Discover option, even when turned on, is not functional most of the time.

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Mabel & Lulu: The Real Life Adventures- An Interactive Book for Kids (iPad Version) is a storybook app that contains two different stories about the dogs Mabel and Lulu. Each story page has interactive elements for kids to tap, resulting in some animation or sound. The stories can be read aloud by a reader or kids can read them on their own. Also, hints on where to tap in each scene, called Help Me Discover, can be turned on or off, but the feature itself didn't work well. One story is about a dog who is locked in a car but needs to pee.

Childhood memories

I may be biased, but this is the greatest app that has ever been bestowed unto me. My opinion is entirely based on my childhood memories, as stated in the title... Continue reading

Is it any good?

MABEL & LULU: THE REAL LIFE ADVENTURES- AN INTERACTIVE BOOK FOR KIDS (IPAD VERSION) is a storybook app that has two stories about dogs Lulu and Mabel. The story words aren't highlighted as they are being read aloud, and kids can't tap on the words to have them read again. Help Me Discover paw prints are supposed to show up after the words have been read, but most of the time they are missing. However, just tapping on the screen will reveal a lot of interactive hotspots. The stories may not have universal appeal as one is about a dog being locked in a car when it needs to pee. The other is about a dog who gets loose in an airport. It is difficult to turn the pages on the iPod Touch/iPhone without accidentally tapping an interactive element in the scene, since the swiping area is so small. Dog-loving kids might like this one, but there are better book apps out there.
