Mahjong Adventures

Fun, kid-friendly match game; watch for in-app purchases.

What parents need to know

Ease of play

This app makes the tile-matching challenge of mah-jongg simpler than usual, ideal for young kids who are new to the game. In the typical mah-jongg game, each tile has only three possible matches; here there are many more duplicate tiles, making it much easier to find a match. There is still strategy to the game, but it's less mentally demanding than a typical mah-jongg game.

Consumerism

Whimsical alternate tile sets are for sale for $.99 each. Also, of the game's five "worlds," only one is available at the start. The other four can be unlocked for $.99 each. You can also unlock the other levels for free by hitting target high scores. Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Mahjong Adventures is a simplified, kid-friendly version of the classic tile-matching game, mah-jongg. Tiles are stacked in interesting and intricate layouts, and players need to remove them by pulling matching pairs from the outer edges of the design. Here there are more matching pairs than usual, making it an easier (but still challenging) game of mah-jongg. High scores are needed to unlock new levels, but those levels are also available as in-app purchases for $.99 each. New tile sets can be purchased in the app, and the app also has ads for other apps from the same publisher. You can turn off in-app purchases from your device's settings menu.

QUALITY

The classic mah-jongg matching game can be a great, brainy pastime for young and old alike, but it can often be too challenging for very small kids. MAHJONG ADVENTURES, in both its simplified gameplay and colorful, cartoony imagery, works beautifully as a child's introduction to a classic game. There's a good deal of marketing going on, with several in-app purchases offered and the potential for getting on the publisher's emailing list, but the ability to unlock new levels for free (based upon meeting a high score) is a much appreciated addition.

Worth it for beginners.

This is a fun game that a has provided my niece with hours of fun. She caught on easily. This is an excellent resource for learning how to play and introduce new users to the game.
