What parents need to know

Educational value

Kids can learn and practice math facts in addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and standard form as they blast through space. The app offers challenges for a wide range of math abilities, even within each skill. Kids can choose the range of numbers (like sums to eight) within the skill, and they can also test combined skills such as addition and subtraction or multiplication and division. Kids can also choose easy, medium, or hard for the challenge level. Math Blaster Hyperblast adds fun and excitement to the important business of practicing math facts.

Ease of play

The game is easy to play, as you tilt to steer your vehicle, but a tablet might get heavy for young kids after a short while.

Violence & scariness

Players fly on a hovercraft of sorts, blasting away at obstacles in their way.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that in Math Blaster HyperBlast, the player shoots weapons in space to blast away robot-like obstacles in their path, but nothing is harmed in the game -- human, alien, or otherwise. By steering your ship, shooting away obstacles, collecting power-ups, and solving math problems, players will advance through the levels.

What's it about?

Kids ride through space, dodging obstacles and shooting aliens. When they encounter the six-legged robot alien, they have to answer math problems in order to continue. Kids can choose from addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, or standard form. They can also pick the number ranges covered in each quiz. Game score is based on the arcade portion of the game, but kids will see score reports after each robot-math encounter showing the number and percent of problems answered correctly.

Is it any good?

The space-themed arcade game MATH BLASTER HYPERBLAST challenges kids to solve math problems in six key areas, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. You're a space cadet who hops on a HyperCycle, a flying motorcycle of sorts, and must weave through winding tunnels to blast through obstacles (such as spinning blades), pick up energy shields, and steer to avoid lasers and other hazardous objects. Simply tilt the device to turn in a given direction and tap the blast or shoot buttons in the bottom corners of the game screen. When you come across a one-eyed, six-armed robot, you'll be asked to solve a few math puzzles to continue. An example is being asked 3 x 12 =, and you must tap the correct answer from six options: 30, 33, 35, 36, 38, and 40. HyperBlast includes an interactive tutorial, high-score list, and a total of 30 levels of math questions. Most importantly, this "edutainment" offering makes math fun by combining fast-action shooting sequences with elementary-level math problems.

Families can talk about...

  • If your kids practice math facts as a daily assignment, Math Blaster Hyperblast may be a fun option.

  • Incorporate little math quizzes into your daily routine. You can become that six-legged alien robot and (verbally) throw math problems at your kids as they eat breakfast or ride in the car.
