Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Math Fact Master - Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division is an orderly, simple (read: no flashy graphics or cute characters) flashcard-style app for basic math skills. Kids can choose the mathematical operation and numbers they'd like to practice, and the flashcards appear. There are two modes -- Flashcard mode is a practice mode, and Challenge mode is a testing mode. The app supports profiles for multiple kids, and parents can have results emailed to them.

Engagement, Approach, Support

Engagement

The flashcards are, well, flashcards. There's nothing terribly engaging about them. However, being able to track results may help keep some kids coming back to play on this app to see improvements in their scores.

Learning Approach

Learning happens here by rote memorization and repetition by using the flashcards. By working to master these core math skills, kids learn the importance of steady academic development.

Support

Kids get immediate feedback on flashcard answers, and there's lots of information provided at the end, too (which can also be emailed to parents or teachers).

This app also helps kids identify their current strengths and weakness with various number sets, as they get immediate feedback after each flashcard and can see their challenge test results. What's it about?

Practice mode gives kids a problem on a flashcard, which they answer (silently or out loud) before tapping to flip the card on the screen. When they flip the card, the answer appears with right (green check) or wrong (red "x") buttons, which users press according to what they answered. In challenge mode, kids enter the answers onto the flashcard, and the screen flashes green for correct and red for incorrect. Additional features include a timer, data showing results, and progress reports that can be emailed to parents.

Is it any good?

QUALITY

MATH FACT MASTER - ADDITION, SUBTRACTION, MULTIPLICATION, DIVISION is similar to a deck of paper flashcards, except on your mobile device. In using this app, kids have the ability to organize by number sets and to see the results of their efforts. There are no visually stunning graphics or arcade-style games here, but it can help kids learn the basic math facts they need to know to advance to higher-level math. And once kids get into it, fast-paced flashcard play can be exciting in its own special way; kids can try to beat their past scores or improve their time. Kids may not be wowed by the simplistic drills, but if you're looking for flashcard-style math practice that kids can perform on their own, it fits the bill.

Families can talk about...

  • Make sure to have your kid's challenge test results emailed to you.

  • If you notice a certain set of numbers or type of problem is a stickler for your kid, find ways to help them practice just that particular set or skill offline with your help. Try having your kid speak the problems out loud or write them on paper.
