Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: Mickey's Wildlife Count Along

(i)

Little kids count and learn animal facts in very simple app.

What parents need to know

Educational value

Kids can learn the very basics about ecosystems and which animals live in each, and they can practice counting on Mickey's Wildlife Count Along. For example, very young kids can learn that deserts are hot and dry so dolphins can't live there, building the concept that there are logical reasons why species live where they do. Kids can also learn some basic nature vocabulary, such as the names of animals and ecosystems. Kids are instructed to find animals in groups of a certain number, providing counting practice along with animal recognition. This preschool app that combines science and math in a fun but not deep way.

Ease of play

Very easy to play. Voice instructions and visual cues (such as highlighted images that kids are supposed to tap or purple arrows) make it easy for kids to know what to do next.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Mickey's Wildlife Count Along is a fun mix of simple counting and general facts about animals and their natural habitats. It's very suitable for preschoolers, but most likely a bit too simplistic for kids any older than that. The app centers on taking a road trip with Mickey and his friends. They visit different habitats, and kids are asked to find a certain number of animals in a group. Then kids tap to take the animals' photo for Mickey's photo album. Mickey's Wildlife Count Along is friendly counting practice for little ones that blends in well with the animal adventure.

What's it about?

Kids go on a road trip with Mickey and friends. Prompted by voice instructions, kids play mini-games ("Try dragging the toon car”), and watch words from the story appear on top of the screen. Mickey takes wrong turns and gets lost in other habitats, like the Arctic and a desert. Kids are instructed to tap on animals, count them, tap on the camera to take a photo, and then put photos with a certain number of animals in Mickey's photo album. By shaking or tilting the screen, kids can make it snow and activate other cool surprises.

Is it any good?

QUALITY

MICKEY'S WILDLIFE COUNT ALONG keeps everything -- both the information given and the way the app is played -- very simple for little ones: "Is this one animal? Tap it if it's one animal." "This is the cold, snowy Arctic."  If the app asks for a group of three animals and a kid taps on a group of four, it will say, "No, that's too many." Mickey explains simple basics about animals and habitat: "It's way too cold for a dolphin to live here." This app is fun for little ones who are just starting to learn how to use apps, how to count, and what animals live in different habitats.

Families can talk about...

  • Talk to your kid about why an animal species that lives in one ecosystem cannot live in others. For example, why would a lizard thrive in the desert but not the Arctic?

  • Encourage your kid to notice groups of animals, such as pairs of birds or dozens of ants. Which animals like to live in groups or pairs, which ones are OK being alone?
