A lot or a little?
The parents' guide to what's in this app.
What parents need to know
Parents need to know that Mickey's Magical Math World by Disney Imagicademy is part of the Imagicademy suite of apps that tie in with the Pinterest-style parent app featuring activity ideas and parental controls. Parents can monitor kids' play and limit time in-app for each child individually by creating a parent account and linking kids' information. The free download includes an example of each game, but unlocking all the content for each game requires an in-app purchase for that specific area, a bundle of content, or an all-access purchase. The sheer volume of things to explore and do might be overwhelming for some kids, so it might make sense to start with one game at a time.
What's it about?
MICKEY'S MAGICAL MATH WORLD BY DISNEY IMAGICADEMY includes five math-themed worlds, each covering a different math topic. Kids practice counting with Minnie on the playground; adding and subtracting with Donald on the beach; matching and counting shapes in space with Mickey; following number sequences and mazes to manage sleepwalkers at a hotel with Daisy; and sorting objects to feed an alien with Goofy. Each game gets increasingly challenging as kids progress, and they earn pins as they complete activities. Parents or kids can visit the Museum of Me to see accomplished tasks and the skills covered in each area.
Is it any good?
Despite the hefty price tag, Mickey's Magical Math World by Disney Imagicademy is quite impressive. 3-D graphics with fun worlds and favorite characters challenge kids in a full early math curriculum that increases the challenge as kids master concepts. Kids get to play and explore, too, tapping in to their creativity and imagination by designing robots and ships. There may be times when kids are confused about what to do next, but after some trial and error they're bound to figure it out. Little ones might not be prepared for load times between worlds, though they won't have to wait more than a few seconds. There's also no instruction or explanation of incorrect answers and no detailed reports for parents through the parent portal, which parents might expect with this kind of app investment. Still, die-hard Mickey fans will definitely want it, and parents looking for engaging math practice for kids will appreciate it.
