Educational Value

Kids can learn and build fluency in core content areas including number sense, estimation, fractions and mixed numbers, decimals, geometry, multiplication, and division. The game features mini-activities within each planet, and kids have to complete a level within a planet to get to the next level. Scaffolding is implemented throughout the game, even within the mini-activities. For example, in a number-line mini-activity, the game starts out with each interval labeled on the number line. As kids progress through the activity, the labels disappear and kids have to use visual clues and estimation. The game also features a Math Facts section. Kids choose a specific topic and then race to complete drills with both speed and accuracy. Hints and feedback for incorrect answers are lacking, but Middle School Math Planet – Fun math game curriculum is a very good tool for practicing key math skills.

Ease of Play

A link to an information page on the home screen would be useful, but the game is fairly easy to navigate. There is information on the Math Facts page and Skill Tracker page.

Pop-ups appear from time to time asking users to rate the game. The free Android version requires an in-app purchase to unlock the full curriculum.

What's it about?

The two main options for play in MIDDLE SCHOOL MATH PLANET are Math Facts and Planet mini-activities. In Math Facts, kids complete a set of grade-appropriate drills as quickly and accurately as possible. In the Planet mini-activities, there are over 30 levels spread across five planets. Kids work on a variety of skills and activities with different themes. A progress-tracking program shows kids' scores as percentiles and as percent correct. Kids are motivated to earn points and stars, which they can use to unlock new avatars.

Is it any good?

Middle School Math Planet – Fun math game curriculum for multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, algebra, place value, angles, and more! has a wide variety of challenging activities that promote a conceptual understanding of math, as well as drill-style problems to help build fluency. The different styles of questions and themes are fun and engaging, and the Skill Tracker program is comprehensive and easy to use. It's helpful that kids can switch from Math Facts, where they work on fluency, to the Planet mini-activities, where they work on various skills to build conceptual understanding. Instructional hints and feedback would be a welcome addition to the game.
