Slick app needs full access to track device use, set limits.
A Lot or a Little?
What you will—and won't—find in this app.
Great potential for monitoring device use, and users will find out what they use their devices for most and how often. Still, the concept is a little intrusive, and some families may not want this level of monitoring. Also, unless kids are on board, they won't learn much.
Ease of Play
Easy setup and multiple view options show you how much you used your phone, when, and where.
Products & Purchases
In-app purchase offers users features for signaling how much time they've spent on their device and other features (such as a very annoying sound effect) to encourage users to take a screen break. The settings menu encourages users to buy these features, but the ad isn't too intrusive.

What’s It About?
MOMENT - SCREEN TIME TRACKER is a device-monitoring app that tracks where, when, and how people use their iOS devices. It runs in the background while other apps run on the device, and users can launch the app to see how long they've used certain apps, when they used their device, and where they were (on a built-in map) when they used them. Parents can add their account to multiple devices and track different users' usage of each device. The pro features (available for an in-app purchase of $4.99) include additional features for monitoring device use and encouraging positive habits. Users can also sign up for a subscription if they want to track multiple devices.
Is It Any Good?
Once you disable all your device's privacy features, Moment does exactly what it says it will: It monitors your location, which apps you use, and for how long, which is a little unnerving. On one hand this app has great potential as a powerful conversation starter to talk about screen time with kids. The in-app graphics are slick and appealing, and they make it easy to get an at-a-glance picture of how you use your device and how much you use it. The pro features might be especially helpful for those who need a little help setting limits on screen time since you can set alarms, timers, and limits. Some users report that the app drains the battery, but the developer offers tips to prevent this. Also, there are mixed reports about how accurate the usage data actually is. Really, the privacy concerns are the biggest issue. The developer writes at length about how to disable privacy features on a device to allow it to run in the background and track device usage. This definitely allows parents to track kids' time using their screen, but it also tracks kids' locations and the times at which they use their device in different places. While this could be useful, it also feels invasive, and some parents and kids may balk at a tool that feel more like surveillance than a vehicle for building a positive family media culture. Like most tracking software, this one's best used with open communication, positive modeling, and some trust to prevent poor choices from going underground.
