Once you disable all your device's privacy features, Moment does exactly what it says it will: It monitors your location, which apps you use, and for how long, which is a little unnerving. On one hand this app has great potential as a powerful conversation starter to talk about screen time with kids. The in-app graphics are slick and appealing, and they make it easy to get an at-a-glance picture of how you use your device and how much you use it. The pro features might be especially helpful for those who need a little help setting limits on screen time since you can set alarms, timers, and limits. Some users report that the app drains the battery, but the developer offers tips to prevent this. Also, there are mixed reports about how accurate the usage data actually is. Really, the privacy concerns are the biggest issue. The developer writes at length about how to disable privacy features on a device to allow it to run in the background and track device usage. This definitely allows parents to track kids' time using their screen, but it also tracks kids' locations and the times at which they use their device in different places. While this could be useful, it also feels invasive, and some parents and kids may balk at a tool that feel more like surveillance than a vehicle for building a positive family media culture. Like most tracking software, this one's best used with open communication, positive modeling, and some trust to prevent poor choices from going underground.
