Monkey Preschool Fix-It

Frenzied game explores basic preschool learning themes.

What parents need to know

Educational value

Kids can get practice with age-appropriate concepts like identifying colors, numbers, letters, and shapes or matching patterns and completing puzzles. They won't be able to choose where to focus their play, but, with endless cycling through the six games, kids will cover them all again and again. And again. Monkey Preschool Fix-It is fun and covers some basic concepts, but the learning is superficial and the games are overstimulating.

Ease of play

Very simple with little explanation needed for use. Kids must be able to tap and drag items across the screen.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Monkey Preschool Fix-It encourages kids to help a monkey do various simple construction jobs. The learning themes are age-appropriate, like hammering colored nails, matching missing pipe pieces, or cutting number boards. The game moves fast, and a lot of the audio might not bother kids but likely will grate on parents (they include monkey noises and a narrator who shouts answer choices and labels). Games appear automatically and randomly, so kids and parents can't choose what to play. There's a pause after every four games wherein kids can add an animated toy to a toy shelf, but there's no natural end to the games, which cycle indefinitely.

What's it about?

Kids jump right in to Monkey Preschool Fix-It, immediately starting an ongoing cycle of six fix-it-themed learning games with colors, numbers, shapes, patterns, puzzles, and letters. When kids answer correctly -- for instance, by choosing the pink nail to hammer -- the monkey flips and makes happy monkey noises. When kids answer incorrectly, the monkey shakes its head. After every four games, kids can choose an animated toy to add to a toy shelf. Parents can create up to three accounts, so three kids can play their own games and collect their own toys.

Is it any good?

QUALITY

Monkey Preschool Fix-It's learning content is relevant and age appropriate with numbers, shapes, puzzles, letters, colors, and patterns. However, in covering so much ground there isn't much depth to how kids explore these concepts. Kids might be better off playing multiple games to explore one concept but in different ways. Also, because Monkey Preschool Fix-It doesn't give kids a way to choose games, they can’t focus on any particular concept.

Although kids will love helping the monkey solve his fix-it problems, the games are sensory overkill and may be overstimulating for some. Frantic transitions, fast-moving backgrounds, too many monkey noises and flips, and a shouting narrator aren't necessary to capture kids' attention. In fact, kids are probably better off without all that stimulation. Overall, Monkey Preschool Fix-It is a cute and engaging game, but the learning content is superficial.

Families can talk about...

  • Extend learning off the screen, talk about colors, point out shapes, and do puzzles.

  • Take advantage of kids' interest in tools and fixing things; let them feel empowered by helping with "fix-it" projects around the house.

  • This game goes on and on and on. Talk to kids about setting healthy limits for screen time.
