Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Monster Truck Nitro is a monster truck racing game that has players jump over various obstacles in a variety of trucks. The game uses semi-realistic physics to convey momentum, but isn't bound by the rules of nature, giving it the flexibility for increased air time. There's a bit of commercialism (advertising other games by the publisher), but nothing especially invasive.

What's it about?

Kids attempt to complete various courses in a certain time period to unlock other tracks. They do this by accelerating using their right thumb and braking with their left (though the brake button is rarely used). Players also tilt the device right and left to control pitch while they're in air. Coming down at the right angle gives you momentum going into the next jump. Along the way, there are nitro boosts that briefly increase your speed. Players can unlock other trucks by achieving gold medals in each track.

Is it any good?

Monster Truck Nitro is great quick-hit fun. It's a game that doesn't require a lot of thought and is wonderful in one- or two-round bursts. But play much longer than that and the flaws become more apparent. The lack of sound when you drive is oddly sterile for a racing game. The game's physics don't feel quite right. And the handling of the trucks can feel sluggish at times.

The game does offer plenty of content, so it's not one you'll finish quickly. The bigger question is will you want to finish it completely -- or will you wander off to another app long before you reach the end of this one?
