Ease of Play

There are no instructions, but the early levels are quite intuitive. The patterns for later levels aren't as intuitive, and can sometimes have additional answers that fit patterns different from the one the app is looking for. There are multiple levels that get slowly more difficult, with some patterns missing one and some missing two pieces.

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Moofy Recognizing Pattern Games is an educational app that gives kids practice in recognizing and continuing patterns with numbers, letters, and shapes. Moofy the caterpillar has a pattern on his body with missing pieces. Kids can tap the three or more choices at the bottom of the screen and the game will read the options to them. Kids can drag the correct missing item to the right place in the pattern. Multiple levels give a variation in difficulty and the types of patterns. There is also a Challenge level that tests all of the other levels combined. When kids are done with each level, the game gives their score, and moves them on to the next level. If the wrong caterpillar segment is dragged onto the body, the game voice says, "Let's try again!" The second time a wrong segment is dragged on to the same spot, the game gives the correct answer.

Is it any good?

MOOFY RECOGNIZING PATTERN GAMES gives kids practice with patterns, helping them discover and continue several different kinds of patterns. Depending on how players interpret the pattern, however, occasionally more than one answer can be thought to be correct, creating confusion. There are no directions for the game, nor is there any clear indication to kids of what kind of patterns they are supposed to follow for each level. There is a notation in the corner of the screen about the patterns that are being tested, but the age group for which this app is intended most likely won't understand it. Also, the child's voice that speaks for the caterpillar has trouble pronouncing some R sounds, and the voice is out of sync with the caterpillar's mouth.
