The parents' guide to what's in this app.

Educational Value

Kids can learn about addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Levels for each operation range from beginner to impossible. To play the game, kids have to simultaneously tap on two to four tiles that are equivalent in value. For example, a tile with the number 5 can be matched with the tile that has the expression "3 + 2." Since kids have to race against time, the game is an excellent way to practice mental math and build fact fluency. Though it basically offers one activity, Motion Math: Match takes flash cards to a whole new level through multiple levels, multi-touch opportunities, gamified rewards, and appealing visuals.

Ease of Play

An instruction screen explains how to play the game, and navigating is very intuitive. Tapping three tiles at once to make a match can be tricky.

What's it about?

Kids start playing MOTION MATH: MATCH by selecting an operation (addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division) and then choosing a challenge level (beginner, medium, challenging, or impossible). A grid of tiles appears, and kids have to tap tiles that have the same value to make matches. Tiles may contain individual numbers or mathematical expressions such as "12 x 3," "18 + 20," and so on. Sometimes only two tiles match, but it's possible to tap four matching tiles simultaneously. Kids also can combine tiles by dragging them; when they do, the numbers on the cards are added together. Once they tap matching tiles, the tiles disappear and new ones are displayed. As kids make matches, a curtain goes up, and they win the level. But if they take too much time, the curtain falls and the game ends. Kids can earn rewards, such as sea creatures and robots, for completing several levels in a row.

Is it any good?

Strangely addictive, this multi-level, varied-ability matching game is a unique way for kids to practice fundamental math skills. The timed challenges are motivating, the silly rewards are fun, and the overall design is appealing. Each mathematical operation has four challenge options with 10 levels in each option, providing hours of gameplay for kids of varying abilities. The game allows for multiple users and tracks how many levels each user has completed. A more comprehensive progress tracker would be great to see as a future update, and a few mini-math games would help to break things up. Also, though the game promotes mental math skills and strategies, an optional scratch pad could help kids who are just learning to use the mathematical operations.
