#### The parents' guide to what's in this app.

Educational Value

Kids can learn about balancing money and time while they practice addition, multiplication, division, and estimation. Motion Math: Pizza! helps kids learn that products must be sold for the right prices. If prices are too low, kids lose money. If prices are too high, they lose customers. If kids take too long to calculate the total for a customer's order, the customer leaves. Kids also have to make sure they purchase enough ingredients or they'll run out of pizzas and lose more customers. Motion Math: Pizza! is a fantastic math game that gives kids a taste of what is needed to run a profitable business.

Ease of Play

Most of the features are intuitive, but some instructions would be helpful for certain tasks.

## What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Motion Math: Pizza! is an innovative educational app that teaches kids about basic economics. It is currently only available through the Motion Math app, which combines six games into a single app that requires a subscription service to play (\$2.99 monthly, or \$29.99 annually). Kids get a start-up budget of \$50.00, which they can use to buy pizza ingredients. Kids use the ingredients to make, name, and price up to three different kinds of pizzas. Then they open their shop and must calculate the correct prices for each customer's order. If kids take too long to fill an order, if the pizzas are priced too high, or if they run out, customers will disappear with a poof! Kids learn a valuable lesson: Running a successful business requires important math and reasoning skills to properly budget money and keep customers satisfied.

MOTION MATH: PIZZA! is all about running a business. Kids start by entering their name, which becomes the name of the pizza shop, and they are given \$50.00 to start the business. Next, kids tap on a van, which takes them to the market to purchase ingredients. At the start of the game, there is one vendor at the market with three pizza toppings for sale. As the game progresses, up to three vendors sell ingredients, and each vendor sells at different prices. As kids earn more money for their pizza shops, they unlock new ingredients. Kids have to divide or use estimation and mental math to pick the vendor with the lowest prices, or their businesses will end up losing money. Once they have their ingredients, kids tap to drive back to the shop and tap on a kitchen area to make up to three different pizzas. Kids can choose which toppings to use and how much of each topping they want per pizza. They name the pizza and set the price. When they are ready for business, kids tap on the pizza shop to open, and customers begin walking through the door and placing orders. Kids use math to determine the cost of each order.

## Is it any good?

Motion Math: Pizza! is an incredibly unique and engaging way for younger kids to learn valuable lessons about economics. Using important math and reasoning skills, kids will enjoy the challenges of making customers happy and earning a profit. Unlocking new pizza toppings is fun too. Once they earn enough money, kid can even purchase upgrades like awnings and outdoor signs for their stores. Most orders involve addition or multiplication and get more challenging as the game progresses. Kids have to think fast to find the order total and enter it into the cash register, or their customers will get tired of waiting and will disappear. On some days, customers name the price for their orders and kids have to decide whether or not to make the deal. Kids also have to try to plan ahead so they have enough ingredients to fill every order for an entire day, or, again, they will lose customers. After a day of sales is completed, kids can view pages that show them how much profit they made, how many of each type of pizza they sold, and other details about their customers. Then they have an opportunity to restock their ingredients before the next day of sales.

Much of the game is intuitive, and some directions and hints are given. However, a more detailed overview of the game would be helpful for kids who need a bit of guidance. And a voice-to-text option would be a welcome feature.

• Use the app to open your own pizza shop and see who can earn more money in one day. Then discuss sales strategies and challenges.

• If kids are struggling, encourage them to set their pizza prices lower so they can practice more basic addition and multiplication when fulfilling customer orders.
