What parents need to know

Parents need to know that My Talking Pet is a harmless, but entertaining self-contained app. With no ads or external content, and nothing but cute puppies and other cuddly animal pictures included, it's safe for the whole family to enjoy. There is a link for sharing which accesses the device's share options, so parents will want to keep an eye on kids who may want to share their creations with your Facebook friends. There isn't much of a tutorial, and some of the controls are fiddly; little ones will need a hand getting starting, especially when using your own images. Read the app's privacy policy to find out about the types of information collected and shared.

What's it about?

MY TALKING PET gives families the chance to create their own talking animals. Upload a picture of your pet or your favorite animal, add some markers to show the app where the eyes, mouth, and head appear, and record someone talking. Press play and watch as your pet repeats what you said with a moving mouth and head. My Talking Pet comes with more than 30 animal faces with the facial recognition markers already built in, so you can get started with the fun without having to hunt down and photograph an animal of your own. There are also frames and stickers you can add, including hats, sunglasses, mustaches, and jewelry. You can even adjust the pitch of the voice recording to give the animals high or low voices. When you're happy with the result, share it with friends and family. If you're in love with your talking pet, add the app as a Widget to your lock screen and have your pet tell you the weather or your next appointment for the day.

Is it any good?

Just a few minutes with this is bound to bring smiles and laughter to your whole family. My Talking Pet is goofy and lighthearted, but you can't help but be charmed by a kitten quoting Shakespeare or a brown bear singing your favorite song. You can send birthday greetings to your grandma or a playful, yet stern reminder to your kids to clean their rooms. The inclusion of so many animals makes it simple to use immediately on installation, but the ability to add more pets (including your own) allows for more personalized experiences. There are no in-app purchases or ads to worry about, so you've got a simple, clean experience that you can enjoy with the whole family. A little tutorial and more easily adjust facial markers would make this a 5-star experience, but who cares? You'll be too busy laughing together to sweat the small stuff.

Talk to your kids about ...

  • Families can talk about using your imagination. What do you think these animals would say if they could actually talk in real life and not just in My Talking Pet? What would you do if an animal spoke to you so you could understand them?

  • How do you like this app in comparison with other apps you could play? As you balance your time on and offscreen, would this be an app you'd choose to use? Why, or why not?
